Addictions

I’ve never had issues with alcohol to the point where it became an addiction. I drink here and there, if I’m lucky I have 1 beer a month. I can count the times I had a bit too much on one hand all my life. But I do know people that have or do struggle with alcoholism. So when I watched Glenn Beck last night I was completely glued to the TV and hearing Laurie Dhue’s story of her 18 year addiction to alcohol. It is one of the most honest, self revealing interviews I have ever seen. Glenn himself is a recovering alcoholic which makes the interview even more real and genuine. I felt I have to share this for those that may have their own addiction issues even if it isn’t with alcohol.

Staycation 2013

So I am on vacation this week. Last year we went to California and Washington State for vacation and shortly after returning I landed a job at Computer Universe as the Apple Certified Macintosh Technician. This year I am not going anywhere, I may not even get to Tennessee really so this is a staycation with my wife back at work at the school and all. But it is nice to get out of the house with either my parents or our nanny Aimee babysitting.

So what will I do? Well with 2 girls and a full-time job I have not had the time to organize time for myself and let’s be honest we should make time for ourselves in health and fitness both physically through exercise and mentally with a good book. I don’t think that is being selfish, you need to take care of yourself for your loved ones and not just yourself.  So I’m looking forward to getting back into my workout routine and reading some great material.

Walking again

This past week I started putting my feet to the pavement again. I have been meaning to do this for quite some time but lacked motivation.

The motivation to start up again came from an unlikely source, hockey. I am a HUGE Anaheim Ducks fan and they had a breakout year this season, winning the Pacific Division and capturing the #2 seed in the West. Unfortunately they faced a hot team in the Detroit Redwings and after 7 games, were beaten 4 games to 3, it sucked, it was painful, and I hate Detroit more than any other team in hockey.

I took that passion and fire and turned it into fuel. The following day, I hit the pavement. I did 2.77 miles on my first outing, 2 days later I did 4 miles, and then 2 miles and 3.26 miles to close out the first week.

I figure my Ducks will be back next year and even better with a renewed fire. A lot of the players will pick up on their off season training so this is me bonding with my team. I hate to lose and I will not lose to obesity anymore, I am mad that there are shirts and shorts that don’t fit me right at this point, but they will soon enough. Just like my Ducks will be back next year to win the Stanley Cup, I will be running a half marathon before I know it.

I have caught a fire in the belly and strong determination, I will not settle anymore!

My Food Plan

Well, it’s another week and last week you will recall I mentioned I would share what I have been eating to help with my weight loss.

For breakfast before work I stop by Subway and get a breakfast sandwich usually with an egg white on English Muffin, it is usually between 160-190 calories, enough to hold me over until lunch time.

For lunch I go to either Sweet Peppers Deli or Atlanta Bread. Both have great low calorie and low sodium offerings. At Atlanta Bread I like the Chicken Waldorf Sandwich. It is about 450 calories and a sodium count of 510.

Finally, there is dinner, usually this is my big meal of the day on calories and sodium. Sometimes it can be a footlong Subway Turkey Breast sandwich about 620 calories or a Chargrilled Chicken Club from Chick-fil-A about 400 calories plus side options.

Going forward, I am going to try and fix things from home to save money as I become a smart grocery shopper on healthy food.

Also I wanted to share it has now been over a week since I last had a regular Coke and 4 days since any soda at all. It has not been easy and I do get caffeine cravings here and there, but thankfully no headaches. I am also drinking between 40-48 ounces of water a day.

That is all for this week, next week I will tell you what I am doing for exercise and fitness. Have a great week!

Health & Fitness Reboot

Well it has been a while since I wrote about fitness. I slacked off a bit after Savannah was born and then going back to work in June. But now thanks to a new device, I have refocused on moving around more at work and eating better.

Over a week ago, I bought a FitbitOne. Was this little device is measure your steps, calories burned, and if worn in a provided wrist band to bed, measure your sleep pattern. Another cool feature is it plays nice with other fitness apps. For example, it connects with MyFitnessPal which I use to log my meals, it also connects with my Withings body scale so it has my most recent body weight and BMI numbers. Also connects with MapMyRun so whatever exercise I do on that is logged on my Fitbit.

I am really enjoying using my Fitbit One and it can easily go 4-5 days before it needs a recharge. It also is a reminder to eat healthier items, so I go to Subway over say Wendy’s.

Next week I will share some of my smarter food choices I am making. Thanks for visiting.

A New Look

Decided to update my personal blog today.

For a Stronger America Mitt Romney

Why Obama should lose his job.

The economy – Look, this is a no brainer. The president has not helped himself on the economy. Yes it was a bad economy he walked into, but guess who else had a terrible economy he inherited…Ronald Reagan. You didn’t hear him make excuses and blame Jimmy Carter constantly. Instead, he fixed it and 4 years later was elected in 49 states in the biggest electoral landslide. Mitt Romney has a record of turning things around from Bain to the Salt Lake City Olympics to being governor of Massachusetts. No contest, Mitt is the better candidate on the economy and turning it around.

Benghazi – This is a disaster that could have been prevented. There is now enough information out there to prove that the Obama Administration could have sent in forces to help Ambassador Stevens and the 3 others that were killed.

He will kill small biz with ObamaCare – One of the things holding back the economy is the uncertainty of ObamaCare being implemented and the affect it will have on small and medium size businesses. While there is some good things in it, the mandates will hinder job creation and hold back employers from expanding payroll.

He’s arrogant – It was obvious in the last debate, he doesn’t like to be challenged on issues and has gotten use to the media kiss ass over the last 4 years. It has gone to his head in a major way. A nice defeat in the election would give him some nice humble pie.

Why Mitt Romney should be President

He understands how an economy works. His time at Bain he got to work with startups like Staples, Dominos Pizza, Sports Authority, and so many others. He understands free markets, something our current President has no idea of.

Will stand with Israel where Obama has not. He has been to Israel and has met with Prime Minister Netanyahu. He understands just how important an ally Israel is to us especially in that region of the world.

He’s Pro-Life! A lot has been made of Mitt Romney’s stand on abortion. Some calling him a flip-flopper. A person that has a genuine change of heart on an issue is not a flip flopper. Norma McCorvey had a change of heart too on abortion, you may know her by another name, Jane Roe of Roe vs. Wade. I believe that Governor Romney had the same change of heart on the issue as she did and I have seen no example where he has believed otherwise.

He’s a man of strong faith and doesn’t hide it. I don’t share the same faith as Mitt Romney, like Paul Ryan, I am a Catholic. However, Mitt’s Mormon faith has guided him to do what is right. He has donated to charities, helped others in need. You may not know this because the Mormon faith instructs its faithful to not go around and toot their horn so to speak.

So, there you have it, these are my reasons why I think that President Obama should lose and why Mitt Romney would be a much better President of the United States.

A Week in the Life

Well, it’s been a bit since my last post. Here is what has been going on this week. Work has been good and fun, I am learning a whole lot of stuff and enjoying the company of my coworkers, we have a lot of fun there.

I am trying to do a better job with balancing out my life with the new work schedule. Before I went back to work I had time to blog on a regular basis, but since going back to work, I have to fit in my blogging whenever I can which is not always easy when you’re a husband and father. Don’t get me wrong, I am blessed with a great family, it is just a matter of me making the time in my schedule to blog without taking that time away from my family which come first.

Another thing I have put off is my walk and jog routine, I am ashamed to say it has been 22 days since my last routine. I will get back into that routine as I have a 5K in October to do.

With all that being said, I have found a new podcast I like which says a lot since I don’t have a lot of time for podcasts. It is called Beyond the To Do List hosted by my friend Erik J. Fisher. Please check it out and if you like it, give it a review on iTunes.

I guess that will do it for this week, I’ll be back next week with another A Week in the Life blog.

Walking to Running

Well, it has been a while since I last wrote about health and fitness. On July 27th I ran the Nightcrawler 5K here in Tupelo, however the times were never posted because they screwed up on the route for a lot of the runners making them run more than 3.1 miles. Unofficially I finished about 49:20, not bad for a walker. I have since been working to improve on my time around the neighborhood. My goal is to eventually become a full time runner, not a heavy run, more like a 6-7 MPH run. My next 5K race will be the Fall Festival in Booneville, MS which is my parents hometown as well as my brother and his girlfriend’s, I hope to finish that one at 45 mins or better. I recently discovered a nearby park to my neighborhood, we have been living here for 6 years and I now just discovered it, even better there is a trail through a tree line that feeds right into the run/walk path at the park which is a half mile track. Well, that is all I have for this week. Be back next week with another update.
